Why You Should Remove a Tree Stump

12/12/2018

Tree stump in yard
You might have had a tree removed in your backyard and now you are left with the tree stump. One of the first things you need to decide on when removing a tree is whether the tree service professionals will also remove the stump or not. If you are still unsure you will have it removed or just let it sit in your backyard, consider these things to help you make that call.

Tree Stumps Can Be Dangerous

Stumps can be hazardous, especially to your children. Think of the number of times you can trip over a stump in your landscape. Children who are running around can overlook the stump and get seriously injured. Further, it can destroy your lawnmower if you are not careful and do not see the tree stump.

They Can Be An Eyesore

If you are concerned about the aesthetics of your landscape, then removing a tree stump is worth considering. No matter how meticulously your lawn is maintained, a sight of a stump can instantly ruin its overall appearance. Removing the stump can drastically improve your landscape.

Tree Stumps Can be Invite Pests and Insects

A tree stump can house a number of pests and you do not want that to happen in your property. When a stump is left in your yard, it will take time for it to decay completely. During the process of its decay, the stump invites insects like termites, ants, and beetles. They can eventually expand in your residence if not removed.

They Can Make Cutting The Grass More Difficult

Tree stumps that are left lying on the ground become a bother. It is hard to move around when you know there is a stump that can trip you over or worse ruin your lawnmower.

There Can Be New Growth And Fungus

Not removing a stump may cause new trees to sprout. If this happens, many small trees will grow in the area where the stump is located. This will not look good in your landscape. It will also cost you money when the new sprouts always come back. You may need to use chemicals to totally get rid of them. In addition, these trees get nutrients from plants that are situated near them. They not only take away from the appearance of your landscape but also cause potential harm to other trees.

Stumps Take Away Space in Your Yard

Stumps can use up space in your property. This is especially bothersome if you only have a small yard. You should be aware that if you have a large tree stump in your yard, the area near it cannot be useful. The stump is just the tip of the iceberg; you still have the root system to deal with. Just think of what other things you can do with the space the stump occupied. You can put a picnic table in that area where the stump is.

Tree Stump House
Tree stumps can be both nuisances and eyesores.  This is why most people opt to have them removed or ground after a tree removal job.  However, if you are creative and so inclined, there are several ideas that transform these ugly eyesores into something useful, and sometime even interesting to look at.   Below are a few ideas for tree stump beyond the normal.
  1. Tree Stump Bird Bath - a tree stump can be transformed into a bird bath one of two ways.  One, it can simply serve as a perch for a traditional bird bath purchased at your big box home improvement store.  Or, it can be carved out, lined with a waterproof lining and filled with water.  Either way, your tree stump can now serve the local wildlife.
  2. Tree Stump Planter - a tree stump can also be transformed into a planter, again in one of two ways.  One way to ring it with chicken wire, fill in the wire with moss, and then fill it with planting soil.  Alternatively, you can carve out a portion of the stump and simply fill with dirt.  Either way, you have made something beautiful out of an old, ugly tree stump.
  3. Tree Stump Carving - this is an idea for talented people or people that know someone talented with a chainsaw and carving tools.  Actually this is more of an idea for a tree trunk anywhere from eight to ten feet tall.  You can carve whatever design(s) that come to mind, to include even a totem pole.   We have seen some really cool carving in the Jacksonville, FL area.
  4. Tree Stump Elf House - with a little creatively, such as a wooden or metal roof and a front door, a tree stump can be turned into a decorative landscape piece.  Think cottage in the woods or even a cabin when you envision this house.

Tree stumps don't always have to be removed in order to avoid have an ugly eyesore in your lawn or landscape.  With one of these ideas, you can turn most stumps into something functional and even beautiful.  However, if none of these ideas appeal to you, call the tree service Jacksonville trusts to remove stumps from your property professionally and affordably.  Call for a free estimate or complete our contact page for a quick response.
